Past Announcements
September 5, 2006 - If you are currently a student member of SLA, ASIS&T, or a student interested in special librarianship, please contact Anamaria Brandon, the SLA student chapter president. The student officers of SLA would like to know who is interested in special librarianship, so we can plan events other SLIS students would benefit from the most. We are very excited about this coming year, and we hope to offer our fellow students an outlet for discussing and learning about this type of librarianship.
September 27, 2006 - The first SLA event of the semester is a tour of LSU Law Library and will take place this Friday, September 29 at 1 pm. The tour will be approximately 1 hour and will be conducted by Charlene Cain, the Head of Access Services for the Law Library. The available space for the tour is now full. If you are still interested in taking the tour, please contact Anamaria Brandon, so we can schedule another one in the near future.
In addition to an actual tour of the facility, Ms. Cain will provide a basic introduction to the library’s collection development, typical reference questions, collaborations between the library and the law school faculty, Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Shephard’s, and the benefits, if any, of a Juris Doctorate (Law degree) in addition to a Masters in Library and Information Science
The LSU Law Library is located in the Paul M. Hebert Law Center across the parade grounds from Coates Hall. Directions can be found here.
November 1, 2006 - Dr. Barry, Dr. McKnight, and Dr. Zach have agreed to share their experience at the ASIS&T conference with us. This discussion session will be held Friday, November 10, at 1 p.m. in Coates 169.
The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) has been in existence for over 60 years and seeks to "establish a new information professionalism in a world where information is of central importance to personal, social, political, and economic progress."
Not only is this event meant to recap the topics discussed at the conference, but also to discuss the relationship between library science and information science as well as the importance of evidence-based practice in librarianship.
January 19, 2007 - The student chapters of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and the Society of American Archivists (SAA) are sponsoring a tour of two divisions of the State Library of Louisiana: Special Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and Louisiana Information Services. The tour will be approximately 1 hour and has been scheduled for Friday, January 26th at 1 pm.
The State Library is located at 701 N. 4th St. in downtown Baton Rouge. Directions to the library are provided here.
Students are encouraged to stay after the tour to get their own state library card, which is a special service made available to LSU's SLIS students.
