Position Description and Responsibilities:

Music and Media Reference Librarian - Tulane University Libraries

 

MUSIC AND MEDIA REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
Howard-Tilton Memorial Library

The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library seeks a creative, dynamic librarian
to serve as the Music and Media specialist within the Reference
Services department. This librarian plays a key role in the library's
efforts to rebuild its world-class music collections, which were
heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Music and Media Reference Librarian is a
creative professional who participates in recovery tasks, including
the reintegration of restored music materials into our collections and
the replacement of items unable to be restored. The librarian develops
new music and media collections in both digital and print formats;
acts as bibliographer and liaison to the Music Department; and works
closely with a full-time Media Specialist who oversees the day-to-day
running of the library's Music & Media facility. He or she develops a
dynamic vision for the library's music and media collections,
following national trends, current research, and the latest practices
in the field. Reporting to the Director of Public Services, the Music
and Media Reference Librarian shares reference duties with other
librarians at a central Reference and Information Desk including some
evening and weekend duty; and participates in the library's
instruction program.

REQUIREMENTS: ALA accredited MLS; degree or significant background in
music; knowledge of music literature as evidenced by course work or
experience; 2 or more years experience in reference and instruction in
an academic library; knowledge of trends in music and media
librarianship including emerging digital audio formats; familiarity
with copyright, licensing and preservation issues; potential for
leadership in a collaborative setting; effective communication and
teaching skills; enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.

PREFERRED: Advanced degree in music or musicology; collection
development experience; demonstrated skill in library instruction.

ENVIRONMENT: Tulane University is an AAU/Carnegie Research I
institution with its main campus located in picturesque uptown New
Orleans. The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is the university's main
library, which is an ARL research collection supporting programs in
the humanities, social sciences, and the sciences. Recently, the
library has been reorganizing, building its collections, and
developing an architectural plan for expanded library facilities.
During this period of dynamic change, the library seeks to build its
professional staff by recruiting talented, energetic librarians
interested in participating in the recovery of Tulane and New Orleans.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop, implement, promote, and evaluate a program
for integrating library research skills into the university
curriculum. Coordinate, organize, and present classroom-based and
other group library instruction for a wide variety of user groups, in
conjunction with librarians, teaching faculty, and other partners.
Provide support and professional development for other librarians and
staff involved in instruction, including providing workshops on
improving teaching effectiveness, developing instruction tools, and
using instruction equipment. Prepare print and web-based instructional
materials and handouts for general-interest print and electronic
resources and library services. Evaluate library instruction
activities and compile, analyze, and report relevant statistics.

technology skills; Proficiency in the use of computer applications for
teaching and learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated teaching ability; ability to work
well as a team leader and team member, as well as independently;
strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
Ability to work collegially and productively with diverse groups in an
urban academic setting; Ability to adapt to rapidly changing
technologies and environments.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Instruction/reference experience in an
academic library; instructional design background; participant in ACRL
Information Literacy Immersion Program.

SALARY: This is a tenure-track 12-month academic faculty position at
the Assistant Librarian rank. Salary: $ 45,000, plus benefits. The

POSITION SUMMARY
The Head of Acquisitions is a creative and team-oriented professional
who oversees acquisitions functions for an ARL-level library with an
annual materials budget of approximately $6 million. This positions
reports directly to the library's Director of Technical Services and
is oversees seven paraprofessional staff members. Responsibilities
includes management of serials and monographs acquisitions, ordering
and invoicing for digital resources, processing and tracking fund
expenditures, vendor relations, and staff supervision. Acquisitions is
a key function in the library and this department head works
collaboratively with many other librarians outside the Technical
Services Division including some 20 bibliographers for the general
collections and those purchasing materials for special collections.
The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is a rapidly changing environment
and its Head of Acquisitions is expected to develop expertise with
emerging technologies and lead and/or participate in innovative
library projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited MLS; minimum 3 years library acquisitions
experience with increasingly responsible work assignments and
supervisory responsibilities; ability to multitask and manage detail;
strong oral and written communication skills; strong critical thinking
skills; accounting experience; experience with vendor relations;
knowledge of ILS systems and EDI; potential for leadership in a
collaborative setting; productive attitude and enthusiasm for an
innovative and changing environment.

Preferred: Acquisitions experience in a mid-to-large academic or
research library.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning: With the Head of Cataloging and Head of Database Management,
the Head of Acquisitions assists the Director of Technical Services as
a member of the Technical Services Division's management team for
planning and coordination of general technical services work and
special projects.

Oversight of acquisitions functions: Oversees ordering, invoicing, and
receiving for all materials; ensures that orders are placed with
appropriate vendors and materials received in a timely manner; reviews
orders on a rotating schedule; reviews and approves purchasing card
purchases.

Processing ordering and invoicing for electronic databases: Ensures
accurate and efficient processing of orders and invoices for digital
resources and works closely with the Associate Dean, the Digital
Services Department, and the Electronic Management Resources
Department on matters pertaining to licensing and access.

Oversight of budget and funds: Monitors collections budget
expenditures in the library's ILS system (Ex Libris Voyager) and is
responsible for all acquisitions payments and vendor relations, for
budget reconciliation at the University level, and for overseeing the
fiscal year close. Prepares for the next fiscal year by distributing
fund allocations within the ILS as directed.

Vendor relations: Represents the library in communications with
vendors regarding purchases and payments; ensures vendor statements
are promptly reviewed and unpaid invoices are secured, reviewed and
paid; selects vendors through knowledge of trends in acquisitions;
monitors vendor performance and makes recommendations for changes as
necessary.

Staffing: Supervises and reviews acquisitions personnel. Assists in
hiring new personnel in the event of vacancies.

Financial Responsibility: Yes. Oversees expenditures of approximately
$6M annually.

Supervisory Responsibility: Yes.

Headquartered in Lake Charles, LA, the Calcasieu Parish Public Library is a 14 branch system with a $6+ million budget, funded by dedicated property millage, with 121.19 FTE and annual circulation nearing 1 million items.

Located on Interstate 10, between New Orleans and Houston, Calcasieu Parish is nationally recognized as an industrial and petrochemical center. Conservation Technician/Instructional Support Associate, SL - 2

 

The University at Albany seeks a full time Conservation Technician to repair, re-house, and Reformat materials for the University Libraries. These functions include both simple and complex book and paper repair and conservation, construction of protective enclosures, and pamphlet binding. Duties also include emergency response activities, and student training/supervision. Performs simple and basic conservation repairs, enclosure construction, and preservation photocopying/scanning for the University Libraries’ general circulating collection. Utilizes technical skills and judgment to carry out appropriate repairs on artifactually valued materials. Assists with exhibition installations. Fabricates protective enclosures for book, pamphlets, compact disks, fold out maps, works of art on paper, photographs, etc. Assists preservation Librarian on the treatment of materials from the Special Collection. As the Department’s student staff supervisor, established specifications and procedures for work performed and workflow patterns, and ensures quality of completed work. Assists with maintenance of Lab furnishings, space and equipment. Reports to the Preservation Librarian.

The Conservation Technician maintains professional affiliations in appropriate organizations, keeps abreast of current and new developments in conservation principles, treatment, and procedures, and actively participates in the Libraries and University community.

Qualifications

Required:  Baccalaureate degree from a US Department of Education institution or nationally recognized accrediting organization. Relevant experience and training. Familiarity with basic conservation philosophy and ethics. Demonstrated ability and minimum 2 years experience with book repair (re-backing, board reattachment, re-sewing, recasing, pamphlet binding, etc.), flat paper repair (dry cleaning, humidification and pressing, washing, mending), enclosure construction (phase boxes, portfolios, encapsulation, matting and framing. Working knowledge of Windows applications. Strong service orientation. Ability and willingness to work according to departmental specifications, guidelines, and procedures. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population.

Preferred: Supervisory experience, experience with technical processing in a large library environment, reformatting experience (photocopying, microfilming, scanning), and experience teaching or conducting workshops.
