Tentative Distance Course Schedule

This is a tentative list of courses to be offered during the next few years.  Although we will make every effort to follow this schedule, it may be necessary to make some changes if faculty are on leave or otherwise unavailable to offer those courses.

Distance Education and Registration Procedures

Distance Education

The school offers several courses by interactive compressed video every semester. Currently, these courses will be available in Baton Rouge and at the University of New Orleans, LSU in Shreveport, Rapides Parish Learning Center in Alexandria, McNeese State University in Lake Charles, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Lafayette Public Library, and Terrebonne Parish Public Library in Houma.

Information on specific offerings is available from the School at (225) 578-3158. Information may also be obtained by mail by writing the Dean, LSU School of Library and Information Science, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70803 or by email at bpaskoff@lsu.edu.

The tentative five year compressed video schedule projects the School’s offerings through Fall of 2008. However, it is reasonable to expect that these offerings will expand before this date is reached. One course is scheduled every fall and spring semester on Tuesday evening and another on Thursday evening and a third course is offered on Saturday morning in the Fall semester. Two courses are offered each Saturday in the spring semester. In each summer semester, a course meeting on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings is scheduled, and additional summer offerings are planned for Monday and Wednesday.

Distance Education Registration Procedures

Distance students must comply with the University calendar and all University registration deadlines. A $75 late service fee will apply to all continuing students who schedule or pay their fees after the deadlines. Continuing students and new students who schedule their classes by the deadline will receive a fee bill and should pay their fees directly to LSU. New students or continuing students who schedule after the deadline will not receive a fee bill and must pay fees by the last day of registration at the Late Registration Service Center, as noted in the Registration Calendar on the LSU website.

The basic procedures are as follows:

New students must first be admitted as regular GRAD admission. They should send the “Application for Admission to Graduate School” with $25 to LSU Graduate Admissions, 114 David Boyd, LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70803.   Students must apply by May 15th for Summer or Fall to avoid the $25 late application fee. October 15th is the application deadline for Spring without paying a $25 late application fee. One set of official    transcripts and scores from the Graduate Record Examination must also be submitted to the Graduate School. Students may also submit an online      application for the Graduate School at http://gradlsu.gs.lsu.edu.

The “SLIS Application for Admission”, a Statement of Purpose, one set of official transcripts, a resume and three letters of recommendation  must be submitted to the School of Library and Information Science department. New students should be admitted and schedule classes through either PAWS or the Extension Credit Programs Office by the published PAWS deadline so that they may complete their registration through the fee bill system.

New and continuing students should register via PAWS or contact Kiedi Mabile, Extension Credit Programs, 1209 Pleasant Hall, by e-mail at kmabile@doce.lsu.edu with the appropriate registration information by0 the PAWS scheduling deadline each semester. If the student registers through PAWS, please be advised that the section number for each site changes each semester—you can view the site/section locations for each semester on the Extension Credit Programs website:  www.extncredit.lsu.edu. The deadline for receipt of the above is noted in the Registration Calendar on the LSU website. You will receive a fee bill via your PAWS account.  This bill must be received (not postmarked) by LSU by the payment deadline indicated on the fee bill and in the Registration Calendar.

Any continuing students who do not schedule by the posted deadline will be assessed a $75 late service fee which they must mail along with other required fees to the LSU Office of Bursar Operations, 125 Thomas Boyd, LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70803. As students will not receive a fee  bill, a print out of the account balance from PAWS or a written statement of courses scheduled should be included with payment for reference.

Please be advised that all new distance students must comply with the immunization compliance policy before registration at LSU can be completed. In the past, distance students who have enrolled in Extension status have been exempt from this requirement. Currently, LSU requires all students to sign the Immunization Form, to ensure that registration is completed and classes are not purged by the system. A copy of the form may be printed from here.  These brief forms should be completed, signed, and returned to the LSU Student Health Center by mail or by FAX prior to registration. Address and FAX number are on the forms. Meeting this immunization requirement is crucial to complete registration for classes. Again, this requirement applies to new students only, not to continuing students, and for students born on or after January 1, 1957.

Please Note: the “exemption” section may be used instead of providing immunization records.
