Graduate Assistantships

The LSU School of Library & Information Science appoints 8 to 15 research assistants each year. Job descriptions vary, depending on faculty research agendas. Typical projects include:

Salary

$11,211 per fiscal year for a 20-hour work week; $8,288 per fiscal year for a 15-hour work week; $6,725 per fiscal year for a 12-hour work week. (Out-of-state students employed as graduate assistants are also granted a nonresident fee exemption.)

SLIS Financial Awards

Only full-time students (nine or more hours in the spring or fall, six or more hours in summer) are eligible for the following financial awards.

Florrinell F. Morton Scholarship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $2,200 scholarship is awarded annually.

The first annual Florrinell F. Morton Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 1983. Florrinell F. Morton served as dean of the LSU SLIS from 1944 to 1971. She also served as president of ALA from 1961-62; AALS president, 1946-47; SWLA president, 1960- 62; and LLA president, 1941-42. Top

Mary Marguerite Hanchey Memorial Fellowship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually.

This scholarship is offered annually to a legal resident of Louisiana for graduate study in the School of Library & Information Science. Marguerite Meadows Hanchey, head of the Science Division and coordinator of Public Services, LSU Library, served as a member of the LSU Library staff from 1939 until her death in 1973. Mrs. Hanchey received her library degree from the LSU Library School in 1940. Top

Sidone Lawrence Walker Scholarship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $1,800 scholarship is awarded annually.

The first Sidone Lawrence Walker Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 1989. Sidone Lawrence Walker, a native of Pineville, Louisiana, received her degree from LSU. Mrs. Walker worked for 20 years in the Arlington, Virginia, public library system. Top

Lewis Mack Fellowship Fellowship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $800 scholarship is awarded annually.

This fellowship is offered annually to a qualified student for graduate study in the School of Library & Information Science. Mrs. Agnes Kasten, M.L.S., LSU, August, 1975, has donated this fellowship in honor of her uncle, Lewis Mack. Top

Donald D. Foos Scholarship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $400 scholarship is awarded annually.

The first Donald D. Foos Scholarship was awarded in the fall of 2005. Donald D. Foos was dean of the School from 1971 to 1978. Top

Richard W. Peck Scholarship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One $700 fellowship is awarded annually.

This fellowship was established with an endowment from award-winning author Richard W. Peck, and is awarded to an applicant interested in pursuing a career in youth services librarianship.

A written statement summarizing the applicant's career goals and interest in youth services must be submitted. Top

John and Hester Slocum Fellowship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One fellowship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded annually.

This fellowship was established by an endowment from John and Hester Slocum, distinguished graduates of the LSU School of Library & Information Science. The fellowship is awarded to a resident of the New Orleans area.

A written statement of the applicant's career objectives must be submitted. Applicants who have not yet been admitted to the MLIS program must present two letters of reference from persons who are knowledgeable of the character, education, and ability; or, if employed in a library, a letter of recommendation from the library director. Friends of the Lafayette Parish Public Library Fellowship

Deadline: October 1 for fall; February 1 for spring each year.

One fellowship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded annually.

This fellowship was established with an endowment from the Friends of the Lafayette Parish Public Library. Applicants must be residents of Lafayette Parish and can be either full or part-time students. A written statement of the applicant's career objectives must be submitted.

Applicants who have not yet been admitted to the MLIS program must present two letters of reference from persons who are knowledgeable of their character, education, and ability; or, if employed in a library, a letter of recommendation from the library director. Top

Louisiana Library Association Trustees Section Fellowship

Deadline: March 15 each year

One or more fellowships equal to the cost of one SLIS course are awarded annually.

This fellowship was established with an endowment from the Educational Foundation of the LLA Trustees Section. It is awarded to a Louisiana resident interested in public librarianship. It is available to full and part-time students. A written statement of the applicant's career objectives must be submitted. Top

H. W. Wilson Scholarship

Deadline: October 1 for fall; February 1 for spring each year.

Only PART-TIME STUDENTS are eligible for this scholarship

One scholarship equal to the cost of one SLIS course is awarded for the fall semester and one scholarship is awarded for the spring semester.

This scholarship was established with an endowment from the H. W. Wilson Foundation. Unconditional admission prior to the deadline dates is required for eligibility. Top

William and Marilyn Gillane Scholarship

Deadline: April 30 each year

One $500.00 scholarship for a current full-time employee of a Louisiana public library serving a population of fewer than 100,000.

Applicants must be enrolled in or have gained admittance to the LSU School of Library and Information Science. Scholarship will be awarded through the Louisiana Library Foundation. Letters of application should include name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, names and contact information for at least two references (one must be your library director, and one a member of your library's board), the name of the library for which you work, and a brief statement about why you are attending or wish to attend library school, and should be mailed to the following address:

State Association Scholarships

Deadline: May 1 each year

The Louisiana Library Association offers a $3,000 scholarship for a full-time student and a $1,000 scholarship for a part-time student.

National Association Scholarships/Fellowships

Deadline: March 15 each year

A number of national associations and societies award financial assistance to students planning to enroll for the master's degree in the School of Library & Information Science.  Examples of such awards are listed below. Students are urged to compete for these prestigious national awards. Consider applying for as many as possible. Receipt of an award from a national association does not negate eligibility for SLIS awards.
