Admission Requirements and Procedures

Admission Requirements

The dean, with the advice of the school's admissions and recruitment committee, admits applicants after their approval for admission by the Graduate School. Students seeking admission to the School of Library & Information Science must meet requirements for both the Graduate School and the SLIS, as indicated below:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university representing sound basic training in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  2. A grade-point average of at least 3.00 ("A"= 4) for the last two years of undergraduate work taken and 3.00 for all graduate-level work previously taken, based on all work for which a grade is given.
  3. Satisfactory academic standing at the last institution attended.
  4. A combined score of at least 1000 on the general aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination, with at least 500 on the verbal section.
  5. Applicants must also provide three letters of recommendation and an "Admission Application Statement".

Admission Procedures

An applicant should submit credentials prior to the applicable deadlines following the instructions on the official University “Application for Admission to Graduate Degree Program” form available from the School of Library & Information Science or the LSU Graduate School. Applicants may submit an online application for Graduate School at http://appl003.lsu.edu/grad/gradschool.nsf/index.

  1. The following items are to be sent to the Graduate School, 114 David Boyd Hall, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70803:
    • The completed “Application for Admission to Graduate Degree Program”.
    • The required application fee and any applicable late fee.
    • One set of official transcripts of all previous college or university work from each institution attended. Transfer credit posted on the records of other institutions is not accepted in lieu of transcripts from the original institution(s). If the college or university will supply you with an official transcript in a sealed and signed envelope, you are to obtain the transcript in that manner and submit it unopened. If the college or university will not send official transcripts to a student, please request that a transcript be sent to the Graduate School at the above address. Transcripts from LSU, Baton Rouge, need not be submitted. International applicants: Include degree statements and an official English translation of each foreign document.
    • Appropriate GRE test scores sent directly by the Educational Testing Service.
  2. The following items are to be sent to the School of Library & Information Science, 267 Coates Hall, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70803:
    • Master of Library and Information Science Admission Application form
    • One page “Statement of Purpose”
    • Three letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes
    • Your personnel resume
    • One set of official transcripts of all previous college or university work from each institution attended.
    • Appropriate GRE test scores sent directly by the Educational Testing Service.

The decision to admit is conditioned upon the applicant providing accurate and current information and updating this information as circumstances change. The act of application constitutes agreement that LSU may investigate the accuracy of the statements and data provided. Falsification, misrepresentation, or omission in application answers and supporting data may result in revocation or denial of admission.
