Society of American Archivists Student Chapter at LSU

History of SAA-LSU

The Society of American Archivists Student Chapter at Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College at Baton Rouge, affectionately known as SAA-LSU, began as a student organization during the 2005-2006 academic year. Josh Williams was president, Christina Caminita was vice president, and Andree Bourgeois was secretary. They were joined by faculty advisor Dr. Elizabeth H. Dow. The members felt an organized group of students was necessary to promote the archival profession in the School of Library and Information Science. Many speakers and tours were scheduled for the 2005-2006 academic year.

The group applied for a charter and official recognition as a student chapter of the Society of American Archivists in May 2006. The five members listed on the application were Russell D. James (president), Neil Guilbeau (vice president), Aimee Everrett (administrative secretary), Andree Bourgeois, and Jennifer Pino. Before the organization was officially recognized, Debbie Cannon joined.

The Council (executive board) of the Society of American Archivists officially chartered the organization as a student chapter in late July 2006. The student chapter was the twenty-fifth such chapter recognized by SAA. By the beginning of the Fall 2006 semester, the ranks of the student chapter had swelled to eleven and the numbers are growing.
